About Education in Kenya

Since 1985, public education in Kenya has been based on an 8-4-4 system, with eight years of primary education, 4 years of secondary education and 4 years of university education
Primary education in Kenya begins at age 5 to 7 after completion of a year of kindergarten
The school year begins in January and ends in November
At the end of Standard 8, pupils sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination
5% of children are not enrolled in school and the problem is far worse in particular regions
About 15% of students are absent on a given day, with much higher absenteeism in certain districts
